Finding Presence in Community: My Meditation Journey

I’ve been coming to our Sunday meditation sessions, a habit I started sporadically last summer and have committed to more regularly over the last couple of months. This morning, even though I was the last to arrive, I was lucky enough to get my favorite spot—bathed in gentle sunlight. My mother would be so happy; she’s always telling me, “Get more sunlight.”

During the session, something shifted in me. At first, I was restless, but in the last ten minutes, I found myself immersed in the sounds of flowing water, and then—the birds. Their song was a simple, joyful reminder to just be present.

My journey into Buddhism and meditation began over a decade ago, during a difficult period in my life. After trying therapy and other supports, I found Deer Park Monastery in San Diego. That’s where I attended a meditation retreat led by Thich Nhat Hanh. Simply being near him was transformative—his calmness radiated outwards. It showed me that who we are—our state of being—is what really impacts those around us.

After moving to Silicon Valley, I struggled to adjust to the intensity and the tech-centered conversations that seemed to revolve around work and stocks rather than life. I have seen firsthand how stress can take a toll on mental health—not just in myself, but colleagues as well.

Two years ago, I went through another rough patch. Meditation, which I had used before as a means to an end (to recover or handle stress), took on new meaning. I now see meditation itself as the destination, not just a tool. Each Sunday, I cherish simply sitting here, sharing the presence of community and nature.

If I’ve learned anything, it’s that life moves one step at a time—one breath at a time. I’m increasingly drawn to supporting mental health in our community. Imagine if everyone had easy access to a caring, nonjudgmental space—a tragedy could be prevented, and hope restored.

Thank you for listening. I deeply appreciate the kindness and spaciousness I find here every week.
