Things You Cannot Control

One thing though I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is how I should react when there are things in the world outside of my control that trouble me. So I collected a few quotes on that topic that maybe will help me or maybe will spur thoughts among others.

The first one is from a Stoic philosopher, Epictetus.

“Some things are up to us, and some things are not up to us. Our opinions, our impulses, our desires, our aversions – in short, whatever is our own doing – are up to us. Our body, our property, our reputation, our office, and whatever is not our own doing are not up to us.”

The second is from Marcus Aurelius, A Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher.

“You have power over your own mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

The third is from a Chinese classic text, Tao Te Ching.

“Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving until the right action arises by itself?”
