A world-renowned Stanford University psychologist, Dr. Carol Dweck, has done a great deal of research on achievement and success. She speaks about the power of mindset, specifically a growth mindset. I am just starting to learn about her research but this is what I’ve started to understand. The growth mindset is about challenging yourself and overcoming hurdles. This mindset is about taking risks and not letting setbacks discourage you. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive in the most challenging times.
So there is a phrase that can be used to promote a growth mindset. Rather than saying I can’t do that, it is about saying, “I can’t do that yet.” And with that, there is an emphasis on the trying and on the effort. It is a way to meet a challenge and overcome it. It opens up possibilities. I once said, “I can’t sit and meditate.” But rather I could have said, “I can’t sit and meditate yet.”
