In Japan, we often hear the phrase “初心忘るべからず” (Shoshin wasuru bekarazu), which means “Don’t forget your beginner’s mind.” This reminder from parents and teachers emphasizes the importance of maintaining a beginner’s mindset throughout life.
What is the Beginner’s Mind?
The concept of the beginner’s mind, popularized by Suzuki Roshi in his book “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind,” encourages us to approach life with curiosity, openness, and a lack of preconceptions. It means seeing the world with fresh eyes, as if experiencing everything for the first time.
Historical Roots
The concept of a beginner’s mind is deeply rooted in Zen Buddhism and Japanese culture. It likely originates from the Zen phrase “初心不改” (Shoshin bukai) found in the “Blue Cliff Record (碧巌録) Hekiganroku,” a collection of Zen koans compiled in 1125. This phrase encourages maintaining one’s original intention.
In 1400, Zeami, a master of Noh—the oldest surviving form of Japanese theater—introduced the phrase “初心忘るべからず” in his work “Fūshi kaden (風姿花伝).” This phrase underscores the importance of preserving a beginner’s mindset while mastering an art. It remains relevant and widely used in Japan today.
Both expressions emphasize humility and continuous learning, and this idea remains relevant today.
Applying the Beginner’s Mind in My Daily Life
Personal Growth
As a triathlete for nearly a decade, I’ve participated in several races each year, dedicating countless hours to swimming, biking, and running. When I first started, I focused on learning various techniques. However, over the years, I sometimes find myself just going through the motions. By reminding myself of the beginner’s mind, I stay focused on improvement and technique.
Relationships
In long-term relationships, it’s easy to take your partner for granted. I realized I had grown accustomed to my wife handling the household chores without properly acknowledging her efforts. By approaching my relationship with a beginner’s mind, I show renewed appreciation and respect for everything she does.
Practicing zazen
During zazen meditation, I remind myself to approach each session as if I am new to the practice. By concentrating on my posture and breathing, I enhance my focus and awareness, which deepens my meditation experience.
By cultivating a beginner’s mind, we open ourselves to new possibilities and maintain a sense of wonder about the world. Let’s take a moment each day to approach life with fresh eyes and an open heart, embracing the wisdom of the beginner’s mind.
