Discovering Yourself through Zazen

Today, Ann shared her thoughts on the practice of Zazen, which we just experienced together.

As we sat on our cushions or stools, our bodies were engaged in the simple act of sitting. However, our minds were on a journey, striving to be present in each moment. Some moments might have been uncomfortable, with our knees aching, while others might have been peaceful, as we listened to the sound of water, birds, and even jets flying overhead.

Each of us comes to Zazen for different reasons. Some are curious about the tranquility and peacefulness they’ve heard about, while others have made a commitment to attend. Some, like the family I once met, hope to improve their sleep. Others are seeking something they can’t quite identify, like a flower blossoming without knowing why.

The key question is: Is this practice helpful for you? In a world that often focuses on mindfulness for productivity and achievement, Zazen offers a different path. It’s a way to explore what we feel is missing in our lives, without the pressure of specific teachings or goals.

At our zendo, we provide a space for each person to discover who they are through this simple practice. We don’t aim to guide you towards any particular teaching, but rather to create an open environment for personal exploration.

So, as you reflect on your experience, ask yourself: Why did I come this morning?

Thank you for being here and engaging in this journey with us.
